Passport application flow for HelloGov — Mobile passport application stepper for HelloGov
The first step of HelloGov’s passport application on a phone: finding out whether someone has their passport book, before the form branches into renewal, lost or first-time flows.
The tricky part was progress. Seventeen steps across five sections is a lot to show on mobile, and 60% of HelloGov’s traffic comes from phones. The answer is a collapsible progress tracker: compact by default, with just the current section and percentage, and expanding into the full roadmap when tapped. The screen stays focused on the question while people can still see where they are.
On desktop there’s room for the full sidebar stepper, so the same question sits beside it. The passport book illustration is there because many people aren’t sure what a passport book is, as opposed to a passport card. A small addition that saves confusion early.
